In ancient times, there used to be a Chakraborty king named Harishchandra. He donated all his kingdom and wealth and sold his wife, son and himself to Sage Vishvamitra.
He became a slave of King Chandal and continued to wear the clothes of the dead while wearing the truth. But in no way deviated from the truth. Many times, the king was drowning in the sea of anxiety and thought in his mind where should I go and what should I do to save myself.
Thus, the king passed many years. One day the king was sitting in this worry when Gautama Rishi came. Seeing them, the king bowed down and told them all his sad story. After hearing this, Gautam Rishi said that by your luck, Rajan will come seven days from today on Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha's Ekadashi named Aja, you should observe his fast properly. Along with this you will also get the blessings of Lord Vishnu. all your sins will be destroyed by the virtue of this fast. After telling the king, Gautama Rishi became introspective at the same time. According to his statement, the king observed a ritual fast and vigil on the arrival of Ekadashi. All the sins of the king were destroyed by the effect of that fast.

1) Sajala: This entails observing a fast throughout the entire day by consuming only water, and breaking the fast by performing Parana on the following day after sunrise.
2) Safala: This involves a fruit-based diet; one may consume a meal consisting of fruits called Phalahar once, after sunset. The fast is then broken on the following day after sunrise during the Parana period.
3)Nirjala: This involves observing a fast without consuming either water or food; this is considered a very rigorous form of fasting. The fast is subsequently broken on the following day after sunrise during the Parana period.
