The Significance of Deva Snan Purnima
This Purnima is very famous in Sri Jagannath Temple Puri, Odisha. Deva Snana Purnima(ଦେବ ସ୍ନାନ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା) is also called Snan Yatra, which is the holy bathing festival of the deities of Sri Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Shubhadra and is celebrated on the full moon day. This full moon comes in the month of Jyeshtha or June.
Snana Yatra of Sri Jagannath
According to Skanda Purana, this auspicious occasion is celebrated to commemorate the appearance of Lord Jagannath and holds great significance for Vaishnav devotees. On the eve of Lord Jagannath Snana Yatra, the idols of the deities are brought from the sanctum sanctorum to the mandapam in a grand procession called "Snana Bedi". Devotees come to have darshan of the three deities.
Gajanana Besha(ଗଜାନନ ବେଶ)
On the day of Snana Yatra, the deities are bathed with pure water from 108 pots drawn from the northern well of the temple with temple rituals and religious chanting. In the evening, at the conclusion of the bathing ritual, Jagannath dressed up in the form of Lord Ganesha. This form of the Lord Jagannath is called "Gajanana Vesha".
Jagannath get Sick for 15 Days
After the Snaan Yatra Lord Jagannath and his siblings fall sick and are kept as in a private patient room for treatment under the supervision of the Raj Vaidya. That room is called "Anasara Home". During the time devotees are not allowed to visit these three deities. Actually, the weather is very humid during this period and this period is not a suitable period because season get changed from Summer to Rainy Season. So, in this period many people get sick in the viral fever, cold, flu etc. The three idols are kept in the "Anasara Ghar" and no one is not allowed to enter the house except temple’s Raj Vaidya and servants until the "Gundicha Rath Yatra(ଗୁଣ୍ଡିଚା ରଥ ଯାତ୍ରା)", this is a period of about 15 days, all these idols are kept in that house. It is believed that Jagannath, Balabhadra and Shubhadra fall sick during this period. At that time, three "Patta Chitra(ପଟ୍ଟ ଚିତ୍ର)" paintings are displayed on the "Ratna Singhasan" instead of the three idols for the devotees to see.
Dashmool Panchan(दशमूल पाँचन)
It is said that when Jagannath falls sick or has fever, he takes the Ayurvedic medicine "Dashmool Panchan" given by the royal physician, which gives him relief from the illness. The three deities recover in a fortnight and start giving darshan to their devotees in a new form during the Rath Yatra held during Ashadha Gupt Navratri(आषाढ़ गुप्त नवरात्रि).
Alaranath Temple (ଆଲାରନାଥ ମନ୍ଦିର)
According to the Jagannath Purana, it is believed that Lord Jagannath stays in the Alarnath temple in Bramhagiri, just 20 km from Puri, for fifteen days or during the Anasar period. Alarnath is a form of Narayana, it is a very old and famous temple, devotees visit the Alarnath temple.
