Ganesh Chaturthi Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great splendour and show all over India. On this day, idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes and pandals (temporary structures). Devotees worship Lord Ganesha with proper rituals. Ganesh Chaturthi marks the beginning of the Ganesh Utsav (Ganesh festival). Learn the correct method and mantras for Ganesh installation here.

Vinayak Chaturthi

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaki Chaturthi, is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm across the country. On this day, idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes and pandals. Lord Ganesha is worshipped with proper rituals, and the Ganesh Utsav is celebrated with great fanfare for the next 10 days from Ganesh Chaturthi.

On Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha is welcomed with great pomp and show, accompanied by drums, trumpets, and showering of flowers. It is very important to perform the Ganesh installation with the correct method and mantras.

Because when a clay idol is installed in a pandal or home, then the rituals of invocation, consecration, and immersion must be performed; otherwise, it is just a clay toy and nothing else. By performing the puja correctly, you will always receive the blessings of Lord Ganesha.

1) Snan Mantra

Before installing Ganesh, fill a soil or metal based pot with water and sit on a puja seat with the urn. Kalasha is the Asan by keeping the Snana Mantra to chant Karna Vidheya.

2) Take Kush & Water

Then take Kush and water in hand and chant

॥ अथः मंत्र ॥

ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽ पि वा। यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यंतरः शुचिः।।

He who remembers the lotus-eyed Lord is purified within his arms. Recite this mantra and sprinkle the water on the worship material.

3) Inner Purification

Then chant the mantras Om Keshavaaya Namah, Om Naranaya Namah, and Om Madhavaaya Namah, drink the water which you have taken in the palm and chant Om Hrishikeshaya Namah with wash your hands simultaneously.

4) Sankalp Mantra

Then place Akshat in your plam with water take the resolution with the following mantra for Ganesh Vrata. Then leave it in the ground and wash your hands.

॥ अथः मंत्र ॥

ॐ विष्णु विष्णु विष्णु:, ॐ तत्सद्य श्री पुराणपुरुषोत्तमस्य विष्णोराज्याय प्रवर्तमानस्य ब्रह्माणो अहनि द्वितीय पराद्धे श्री श्वेतवाराह कल्प सातवां वैवस्वत मन्वंतर, अट्ठाईसवां कलियुग, कलिप्रथमा चरण जम्बूद्वीप भरतखंड आर्यावर्त ब्रह्मावर्त के अंतर्गत एकादशेश पुण्य (अपने) शहर/गांव का नाम) क्षेत्र बुद्धावतार वीर विक्रमादित्यनृपते : 2082, तमे'बड़े नल नाम संवत्सरे सूर्य दक्षिणायणे, मसानं मासोत्तमे भद्र मासे शुक्ल पक्षे चतुर्थी तिथिौ बुधवासरे चित्र नक्षत्रे शुक्ल योग विष्टि करणदित्सुभे योग (नाम गोत्र) गोत्रोत्पन्नो'हम ।।

Then share your wish silently with Ganesh Ji, I shall perform the ritual of worship of Mahaganapati for the purpose of obtaining the success and memory for the sake of peace as well as remove all evil effects and for the destruction of all sins.

5) Kalash Sthapana

Then worship the urn (Kalash). Place a coconut on the urn wrapped in red cloth and then tie it to Molly. Place five mango/ Ashoka/ Jamun/Paan leaves in the urn along with the coconut. And then light a ghee lamp and place it near the urn.

6) Meditate Lord Varuna

Then meditate and invite Lord Varuna and take flowers and a little of Akshat with water in hand and say,

॥ अथः मंत्र ॥

ॐ तत्वयामि ब्राह्मण वन्दमानस्तदशस्ते यजमानो हविभिः । अहेदमानो वरुणेहा बोध्युर्षांसा मन आयुः प्रमोषिः ।। It means, I invite and offer my obeisances to Lord Varuna in this urn along with his family armed with weapons.

7) Meditate Before Puja

Now worship Lord Ganesha and meditate on Lord Ganesha. Before meditating, place a flower in your hand and place some rice in it. After this,

गजाननमभूतगणदिसेवितं कपित्थ जम्बू फलचारुभक्षणम्

I bow with great respect to the lotus feet of Vighneshwara, the son of Goddess Uma, who is the destroyer of sorrow.’ While chanting the mantra, offer the flower to Lord Ganesha.

8) Avahan to Shri Ganesh

Now take Akshat and some water in hand and say, Om Gang Ganapataye Ihagachcha, Iha Supratishtho Bhava (ॐ गं गणपतये इहागच्छ इहा सुप्रतिष्ठो भव।)’ and offer Akshat to Lord Ganesha. Take water in your hands again and say ‘Etani padyadyachamaniya-snaniyam, punarachamaniyam omm gang ganapataye namah (एतानि पद्याद्यचामनीय-स्नानीयं, पुनराचामनीयं ऊम् गं गणपतये नम:)’ Put the Akshat on the idol or photo of Lord Ganesh.

9) Offer Hastyo Arghya

A water mix with sandal wood past, Kapoor,gangajal, flower, akshat with a spoon and after reciting following mantra put it in the hand of Ganesh. The do Tilak with Sandalwood paste and turmeric paste to Sri Ganesha and while doing the tilak recite with following mantra.

Idam Hastoargyam omm Gang Ganapataye Namah, Hasto Arghya Samarpayami (इदं हस्तोअर्ग्यम ऊँ गं गणपतये नमः, हस्तोअर्घ्य समर्पयामि)

10) Offer Red Chandan

Then tilak to Sri Ganesha with red sandalwood paste and recite following mantra, Idam Rakta Chandanam Lepanam Om Gm Ganapataye Namah (इदं रक्त चंदनं लेपनं ॐ गं गणपतये नमः)

11) Offer Rolli (Sindoor)

Then do tilak to Sri Ganesha with Roli and recite following mantra,

Idam Sindurabharanam Lepanam Om Gang Ganapataye Namah. (इदं सिन्दुराभरणं लेपनं ॐ गं गणपतये नम)

12) Offer Bael Leaves

Offer Bael Leaves to Sri Ganesha with recite by the following mantra, Idam Durvadalam Ch Bilva Patram Samarpayami

13) Offer Durva, Bael Leaves

Then offer Durva grass with Bael leaves to Ganesha Ji and say following mantra and recite with the following mantra. Idam Durvadalam ch Vilvapatram Omm Gang Ganapataye Namah. Durvankuram ch Vilvapatram Samarpayami (इदं दुर्वादलं च विल्वपत्रं ॐ गं गणपतये नमः। दुर्वांकुरं च विल्वपत्रं समर्पयामि)

14) Offer Yellow Color Cloth (Vastra)

Offering yellow or red clothes to Ganesha, and say, “Hey Ganapati, I offer this red or yellow cloth to you and recite with the following mantra.

Idam Vastram omm Gang Ganapataye Namah. Vastram Samarpayami (इदं वस्त्रं ऊँ गं गणपतये नमः। वस्त्रं समर्पयामि)

15) Offer Flowers & Garlands

Offer flowers garlands and flowers to Lord Ganesha and say with the following mantra and bow in-front of Sri Ganesha. Eshah Pushpanjali Omm Gang Ganapataye Namah | Pushpanjali Samarpayami (एषः पुष्पांजलि ॐ गं गणपतये नमः | पुष्पांजलि समर्पयामि)

16) Offer Dhoop, Deep, Flowers

Show Deep and Dhoop to Lord Ganesh with the following mantra. Omm Gang Ganapatye Namah Deepam Swaha, Dhoopam Swaha (ॐ गं गणपतये नमः दीपं स्वाहा, धूपं स्वाहा)

17) Offer Five Seasonal Fruits

Offer any five sweet seasonal fruits like banana, mango, apple, orange, grapes with the following mantra.

Idam Rituphalam omm Gang Ganapataye Namah. Rituphalani Samarpayami (इदं ऋतुफलम् ॐ गं गणपतये नमः। ऋतुफलनि समर्पयामि)

18) Offer Naivedya

Naivedya should be very satvik, you can offer Naivedya to Sri Ganesh such as Motichoor Ladu, Modak, Kheer, sweets, halwa, puri and so on. Ganesh ji love to eat Modan very well. Offer naivedya with the reciting of following mantra.

Idam Nanavidhi Naivedyani Omm Gang Ganapataye Namah | Nanavidhi Naivedani Samarpayami (इदं नानाविधि नैवेद्यानि ॐ गं गणपतये नमः। नानाविधि नैवेद्यानि समर्पयामि )

19) Offer Normal Water

After offering naivedya, then offer normal water to wash mouth and hands as “Achamanam” with the following mantra. Idam Achamayam Omm Gang Ganapataye Namah | Achamayam Samarpayami (इदं आचमनीयं ॐ गं गणपतये नमः | आचमनीयं समर्पयामि)

20) Offer Paan-Supari (Tambulam)

Then offer Tambulam (Banarasi Paan) to Ganesha and say ‘ इदं तम्बुलम ॐ गं गणपतये नमः | ताम्बुलम समर्पयामि (इदं आचमनीयं ॐ गं गणपतये नमः | आचमनीयं समर्पयामि)

21) Havan

If you prefer to do Havan then you can perform a Havan here in the Ganesh Puja. Most of the people do Havan on the day. After did havan done you can go for Aarti. If you don’t perfom Havan then do Aarti finally.

22) Managal Aarti

Aarti bati should be in cotton with cow ghee+pure Kapoor+elaichi+loung and offer Aarti with Sri Ganesh Aarti Bhajan. After performing Aarti puja, recite with the following mantra. Idam Kapoorarti Omm Gang Ganapataye Namah | Kapoorarti Samarpayami (इदं कपूरआरती ॐ गं गणपतये नमः | कपूरार्ति समर्पयामि)

23) Kshyama Yachanam

After performing kpoor aarti, apologize to Sri Ganesh for any types of mistakes whether it is known or unknown and request to forgive you. You can recite with the following mantra. Omm gang Ganapataye Namah Kshyama Yachanam Samarpayami (ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ॐ क्ष्मायाचनाम समर्पयामि) After all, your Ganesh Puja rituals ceremony is completed now.
