About Pandu Osha 2025

Introduction to Pandu Osha

The King Pandu was the son of Ambalika, the second wife of King Vichitravirya. Pandu married Kunti and Madri. His sons were born through the boons given by the Lord Sun to his wife Kunti and Madri by several gods, after the curse of Sage Kindama, as they were unable to have children.

Pandu Osha vs Pandu Purnima

Pandu Osa, also known as Pandu Purnima, is a festival celebrated in Odisha, especially dedicated to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, the eldest brother among the Pandavas. This fast falls on the full moon day according to the Odia Calendar. According to the English calendar, it falls in November and December in the month of Margashirsha.

It is also called Pandu Purnima. Some people say that Pandu Osa is dedicated to the King Yudhishthira, the eldest brother of the Pandavas. Pandu Osa, the word Osha means a fast whose observance brings good fortune. The main significance of this fast is that, it is believed that, if someone does not have any children, especially boys, then he can keep Pandu Osha fast on this day to carry forward his lineage. There is a story related to Pandu Osha, which I would like to share with you here.

The Story of Pandu Osha

In ancient times, there was a king in Kalinga Nagari, who was ruling for a long time. But he always had regret and remorse for the fact that he had no children. Some sages advised him to perform Yagya and the king also did the same as per their advice. But unfortunately, he was unsuccessful.

After sometime he came to the forest to take advice from a sage. At last, he met a sage, he bowed to him and said;

Maharaj! I am the king of Kalinga Nagari and my age is increasing day by day. But after my death there is no one to sit on my throne and take over the Kingdom. Please help me, I have come to you with great hope.

The sage said, Oh King! In the coming month there comes a full moon, which is called 'Pandu Purnima'. Go to your kingdom and tell your wife to observe a fast on this day.

I say, you will definitely get a son. He will return to his kingdom and share everything with his queen. The queen also happily observes this fast.

After sometime, the king got a son. Since then, people know the importance of this Pandu Osha. This fast is especially observed by those who do not have any children.
