Introduction to Prathmastami
The festival of Prathmastami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha and Ashtami Tithi. Hence the name of this festival is Prathama + Ashtami = Prathmastami of Margashirsha month according to Odia Calendar. This festival falls exactly eight days after Kartik Purnima.
Prathamastami is a ritualistic and traditional festival of Odisha. This festival is mainly celebrated for the happy life and prosperity of the eldest child.
Rituals of Prathmastami(ପ୍ରଥମାଷ୍ଟମୀର ରୀତିନୀତି)
On this day, the eldest child whether he/she wears new clothes, then performs special puja by lighting a ghee lamp, offering incense, Diya, Naivedya, Roli, Moli, Kalawa, Dakshina.
This puja is performed by the senior female relatives of the family. Finally, the puja concludes with the Aarti of the eldest child.
The biggest significance of this festival is that the maternal uncle of the eldest child sends the necessary items for rituals like new clothes, puja samagri used in Prathmastami such as coconut, jaggery, newly cut rice, black gram, turmeric leaves, coconut and other things.
Along with the elder child, they worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Shashti and the Kul Devta. The main dish of the day is "Enduri Pitha", "Muan Pitha" cooked in turmeric or haldi leaves is the most important dish of the festival. Some people also said that it is known as Saubhagya Ashtami or Kaal Bhairav Ashtami or Prathmashtami Ashtami.
