Five Treatments of Puja (पाँच उपचार पूजा)
First, the main purpose of this type of Puja is two-fold. Primarily it is to uplift the five senses of the worshiper and by doing so elevate him to a higher level of consciousness that will promote good thoughts and actions.
Significance of Five Treatments of Puja
Second, it draws upon the Indian traditions of honouring a guest, wherein each “Upachara” is a service to the deity who takes presence in the idols called "Vigraha" for the duration of the Puja. The treatments are called "Panchopachar Puja" items also used in the five treatments are like following:
1. Gandha: Applying tilak with sandal wood paste to God.
2. Flowers: Offering seasonal flowers to the God.
3. Incense(Dhoop): Lighting the incense or dhoop in front of God.
4. Deep(Ghee Lamp): Lighting up a ghee lamp or diya in front of God.
5. Naivedya(Prasad): Offering Satvik Food as Naivedya like sweets, kheer to God.
So, above these items are created with five treatments are called “Panchopachara Puja(पंचोपचार पूजा)”, mostly this puja do on regular basis and time will save rather than “Sixteen Upachara Puja(सोलह उपचार पूजा)” is lengthy and time taking.
This types of puja mostly done in big temples and on the occasion of any prime festivals. The Five Upachara puja is the short-cut method instead of Sixteen Upachara to worship god on regular basis at your home.
