About Bada Osa 2025

When is Bada Osa (बड़ ओसा)?

Bada Osha is one of the most important festivals of Odisha. The term “Bada” means big and Osha means Vrat or Upavas. This is basically a major occasion of fasting. After Navratri, all these regional festivals start and go till Shivaratri. On this day people worship Lord Shiva for blessings. Bada Osha usually falls on the third day of “Panchuk” of Kartik month, the last five days of Oriya month of Kartik. According to the Oriya calendar, this festival is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi. Bada Osha is the main temple of Dhabaleshwar Peeth on the island of Mahanadi near Mancheshwar village of Athagarh in Cuttack district and a very big fair is held near the main temple. Every year thousands of disciples come to have visit of Lord Dhabaleshwar. This fast is done for Lord Shiva. The devotee ends the long day's fast with prayers and offerings to Lord Shiva. The famous Naivedya or Prasad offered on this day is a special Kheer and Gaja Pitha.

The Significance of Bada Osa (ବଡ଼ ଓଷାର ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱ)

During the festival, there are thousands of devotees gathered at the Dabaleshwar temple in Cuttack district of Odisha today on the occasion of Bada Osha, celebrated on the 13th day of Shukla Paksha in the holy month of Kartik.

The doors of the temple are opened only at 3 AM in the morning because there is a huge crowd of devotees in the temple to have visit of Lord Shiva.

Bad Osa is a festival of fasting which is usually observed for the well-being and welfare of oneself or loved ones. On the morning of Chaturdashi or the 14th day of Bada Osha, a special offering 'Gaja Bhog', a type of rice cake filled with moong, grated coconut and cheese, is also offered to the Lord. Devotees break their fast early in the morning after having darshan of the Lord and Gajak Bhog. This temple is very near to Cuttack City area. The Cuttack Municipal Administration has organised traffic, safety and security arrangements to ensure smooth movement of devotees to the Dhabaleshwar temple. A very big fair starts from Bada Osa which is world famous by the name of “Bali Jatra”. This Jatra lasts for at least 15 days. Many big businessmen from India and abroad attend this fair to do business. But whatever it is a very famous mela. Everyone should visit this place once.
