What is Paya Shradha(पया श्रद्धा)?
Paya Shradha is basically for those people who were unable to perform their Pitri Shradha during the “Mahalaya’ which is come in Ashwin Month just before Navratra.
Significance of Paya Shradha
Paya Shradha is basically perform in East and some parts of North East side of India such as Odisha, Bengal, Assam. As per our Vedic scriptures, our ancestors’ spirits like our foremothers and forefathers visit the earth during the Shradha period and Mahalaya to get “Pitri Pinda” after that they return to their heavenly abode after receiving this Paya Shraddha on the Diwali night. It is also said that; this day is also very auspicious to give “Pitru Shradha” or “Pitru Tarpan” to the ancestors.
Some people like to do Pitru Shradha or Tarpan in sacred places or bank of sacred rivers such as Varanasi, Haridwar, Gaya, on the bank of any river or best is Ganga, Narmada, Sarayu, Yamuna, Baitarani rivers are the best to perform Pitru Shradha on the day auspicious moment during the Paya Shradha (पया श्रद्धा).
There are some rituals need to be performed during the Pitru Paksha Shradha.
After taking bath, you need to take “Sankalp” to perform following rituals for your ancestors.
Pitru Tarpan, it is basically performed by performing with some ganga water and mixed with black sesame seeds in a spoon (Patri) and offer to the ancestors with the mantras.
Pinda Daan, in this ritual offer raw rice with some fruits, sesame seeds, and barley or rice flour and offer to the ancestors. This ritual will be done on the guidance of your puja performer like Pandit or Brahmin. After donating the Pinda or “Pinda Daan”, take “Ashirwad” from your Purohit or Brahmin, give him Dakshina, donate new clothes, foods, any new things he may be liked as per your wish.
Feeding Brahmins, on the “Pitru Paksh Shradha” some people said, this is very auspicious if you feed and donate brahmins and poor people. Their blessings will serve you as a “Purva Punya” for the next re-birth.
It is believed that, if anyone can do perform these rituals each year till, he lived, they will achieve their ancestors bestow blessings of happiness, prosperity, and wellbeing as well as gain all types material happiness in the life.
