Introduction to Wangala Festival(वंगाला महोत्सव)
Wangala is a regional festival north-east in India. The festival is of the hundred drums, a harvest festival celebrated by the Garo tribe, who live in Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Assam in India and Greater Mymensingh in Bangladesh.
The Significance of Wangala Festival
This is a postharvest festival, they give thanks to 'Misi Saljong', who is the sun god, for blessing the people for a rich harvest. Wangala is celebrated between in September and December month every year, with different villages setting different dates for the occasion.
People of this religion, they take rest in their house and enjoy this festival. On the occasion they relax for days the hills and valleys echoes with the extraordinary beat of drums. With the drums they also do their regional tribal dance performed during the festival. Men and women clad in their festive fineries. Young and old people also join the festivities with equal enthusiasm. Basically, the men beat the drums, the line moves forward in rhythmic accord as well as women do dance in a row according to drum beats. There is a notable sense of tempo in the performers, young and old, and the energetic dance leaves a lasting impression upon the beholder.
Basically, this Wangala festival is a way to preserve and promote the cultural identity of Garos tribal people in Meghalaya. This festival is one of the prime festivals they enjoy a lot and people also come to exhibit the culture and tradition of the region.
