About Ningol Chakkouba 2025

Introduction to Ningol Chakkouba

Manipur is a colorful society with abundant natural beauty and diverse cultures with many ethnic communities living together since ancient times. This basically belongs to tribal community. Many social festivals and celebrations have been observed by the Manipuri people throughout history which keep them bound in the bond of love and responsibility. Ningol Chakouba is one of the popularly celebrated festivals in the state which falls on the second lunar day of Hiyangei month as per Manipuri calendar.

The Significance of Ningol Chakkouba

The term Ningol means 'married woman' and chacouba means 'invitation to a feast'; Hence this festival is where married women are invited to their parents' house for a feast. The invitation comes from the sons of Ningol's ancestral family. Usually, a week in advance; It strengthens the bonds of affection between siblings, daughters and parents of a family.

The History of Ningol Chakkouba

The history of Ningol Chakouba dates back to the time when King Nongda Lyren Pakhangba ruled Manipur. Queen Lysana invited her brother Poiriton to the king's palace once a year for a feast. Therefore, it was known as “Piba” means brother or son of Chakouba instead of Ningol Chakouba. But this tradition changed somehow in the 19th century during the time of King Chadrakirti Singh. He invited his sisters for the feast as it was difficult for him to visit their place in one day. Thus, since then this tradition transformed into Ningol Chakouba and became an integral part of the rich culture and heritage of Manipur.

Festival basically brings affection and happiness in the family and relations. People give value to each other, share in happiness and sorrow. There are many such festivals in Manipur which seem different and even better than all the other festivals.
