Introduction to Bali Tritiya Fast

“Bali Tritiya Osha”, this fast is observed by married women in Odisha. Bali Tritiya is celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha of Bhadra month which usually falls a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. This puja is performed in honour of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. It is a commonly belief that, especially in the state of Odisha that Goddess Parvati observed this fast to get the hand of Lord Shiva means to marry the Lord Shiva.

Bali Tritiya is also known as Teej Vrat

As a part of this ritual, a group of women observe fast and after bathing in the evening, they bring sand from the river to make Shiva Linga and Shakti for worship. A group of women participate in this ceremony by fasting, and after bathing in the evening, they bring sand from the river to make Shiva Linga and Shakti for worship. “Bali” means sand in Odia Language. Hence, this festival is known as Bali Tritiya. Unmarried women also observe this vrat. Bali Tritiya is similar to Hartalika Teej Bhatri celebrated in other parts of India.

  • After the Kalash Sthapana, the idols of Shiva and Parvati made of clay are placed there.
  • Then the lamps are lit, incense, lamps, fragrance, sandalwood, Gangajal, vermilion, Tilak are offered to Shiva and Parvati and “Shodashopachar Puja (षोडशोपचार पूजा)” is performed.
  • 5 fruits and 5 flowers are offered.
  • After that you can offer Kheer, sweets, Puri, Halwa, Gajak etc. prepared at home to Lord Bholenath and Mother Parvati as Naivedya.
  • After that the book of Bali Tritiya Vrat Katha is read and narrated. In the end, after performing Aarti, Prasad should be distributed to the children.
  • On the day of Bali Tritiya, you should donate something according to your capacity.
  • After the puja, you should take the blessings of the Guru at home.
  • “Nirjala Vrat (निर्जला व्रत)” is to be kept on Bali Tritiya. This fast is also kept for peace and happiness in the house.
  • Before starting the puja, you have to take a Sankalp that for how many years and why you want to keep this fast. Yes, it is very important, no matter which fast you keep, it is necessary to take a Sankalp before the fast.
