Why Basava Jayanti Celebrates

Basavanna was born in 1105 AD in the northern part of Karnataka into a Kannada family devoted to the Hindu deity Shiva. He grew up in Kudalasangama(कुदालसंगम) and married the Prime Minister's daughter.

As administrator of the royal treasury, Basava helped spread the Lingayat sect by imparting education and distributing money to Lingayat associations. Several important Lingayat works are attributed to Basavanna, including vachanas such as Shata-sthala-vachana(शत-स्थल-वचन), Kala-jnana-vachana (कला-ज्ञान-वचन), Mantra-Gopya, Ghatachakra-Vachana and Raj-Yoga-Vachana (घटचक्र-वचन और राज-योग-वचन). Basavanna or Basava believed that every human being was equal, irrespective of caste and all forms of physical labor were equally important.

Why it’s Name is Lingayats?

Basava advocated wearing a necklace with a pendant containing a small object symbolizing Shiva called a linga, from which the Lingayats get their name.
