About Karthika Purnima 2025

The Importance of Karthik Purnima (कार्तिक पूर्णिमा)

Kartika Purnima also known as “Kartika Pournami” in Bengal, Assam, and Odisha language, it is a Hindu, Sikh, and Jain cultural festival that is celebrated on Purnima means full moon day, the 15th day of the lunar month of Kartika. It comes on November or December of the Gregorian calendar and is also known as Tripurari Purnima. It is also called as Deva Deepavali. Because it was a great day for all.

Why it is called Tripuri Purnima (त्रिपुरी पूर्णिमा)?

'Tripuri Purnima' or 'Tripurari Purnima' derives its name from Tripurari, the foe of the demon Tripurasura. In some legends of Kartika Purnima, the term is used to denote the three demon sons of Tarakasura. Tripurari is an epithet of the god Shiva. he killed Tripurasura on this day. Tripurasura had conquered the whole world and defeated the gods and also created three cities in space, together called "Tripura". The killing of the demon(s) and destruction of his or their cities with a single arrow by Shiva overjoyed the gods, and they declared the day as a festival of illuminations.

The Significance of Karthik Purnima

During the devastating eighteen-day war during the Mahabharata period, when Yudhishthir spoke something after seeing the relatives of the warriors and sages, Lord Shri Krishna along with the Pandavas came to the vast sandy plain area of Garh Khadar. Pandavas took bath on Kartik Shukla Ashtami and performed Yagna on the banks of Ganga till Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi. After this, they paid tribute to the departed souls by lighting a lamp at night. Therefore, bathing in Ganga on this day and especially coming to Garh Mukteshwar pilgrimage city and taking bath has special significance. On the day of Kartik Purnima, taking bath in Ganga, donating lamp, performing yagna etc., the sins and heat of the universe are mitigated. Donating food, money and clothes on this day is also given great importance. Whoever donates on this day gets manifold benefits. It is also believed that whatever a person donates on this day is preserved in heaven for him and he gets it back in heaven after leaving the world of death.

It is mentioned in the scriptures that on the day of Kartik Purnima, taking bath in holy rivers and lakes and religious places like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Narmada, Gandak, Kurukshetra, Ayodhya, Kashi gives special virtue. A person should not remain without bathing on the full moon day of Kartik month.
