Significance of Chaitra Purnima
Chaitra Purnima falls on the 15th day of the lunar fortnight. This day was somewhat auspicious, it is said that in some idols of India people worship Lord Chitragupta, the creator of Lord Yama. It is believed that Chitragupta is the record of all the arts on this earth. and recorded the good and bad deeds of his humans for Yama, the Hindu god of death and the underworld. On this day, devotees ask Chitragupta to give them good thoughts and deeds that will benefit all beings.
Chitra Purnima(चैत्र पूर्णिमा) is a story basically centered on Indra, the king of the Devas and his Jupiter, based on the folklore of Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam(तिरुविलियदल पुराणम्). According to the legend, once there was an argument between Indra and Brihaspati over something which Indra had said to Brihaspati. Indra's guru Brihaspati instructed him to undertake a pilgrimage on Earth to atone for his negative deeds.
After accepting, Indra fulfilled his guru's wish. During the journey Indra found a Shivalinga under the Kadamba tree. Later, he understood that it was Shiva who was helping him in reducing his bad karma. He soon started offering lotus flowers to Shiva as a form of worship. This legend is believed to have taken place by followers in Madurai. Devotees visit the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai to worship Lord Shiva.
