About First Day of Bathukamma 2025

The Meaning of Bathukamma(बतुकम्म)

Bathukamma is a flower festival celebrated by women in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This festival is celebrated according to the Satavahana calendar. It is a nine-day festival starting from Pitru Amavasya in September and October according to the Gregorian calendar.

Bathukamma Celebrates for 9 Days

Bathukamma is celebrated for nine days and coincides with the festivals of Sharada Navaratri and Durga Puja. It begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya and the festivals continue for 9 days. Bodemma festival marks the end of the rainy season while Bathukamma marks the beginning of autumn or Shishir season.

The word 'Bathukamma' in Telugu language means 'living mother goddess'. Bathukamma is a beautiful flowerbed decorated with different unique seasonal flowers, most of which are medicinal, fragrant, in seven concentric layers in the shape of the temple gopuram. Usually, brothers bring flowers to arrange Bathukamma for their mother and sisters.

During the festival women do their makeup and adorn themselves with traditional sarees, ornaments, and jewellery to look beautiful and attractive. Teenage girls wear lehenga, half saree, langa with ornaments to enhance the beauty of traditional attire.

Bathukamma is nine nights festivals they are like as following:

  • The 1st day of Bathukamma is called Engili Pula Bathukamma(అంగిలి పుల్ల బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 2nd day of Bathukamma is called Atukula Bathukamma (అటుకుల బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 3rd day of Bathukamma is called Muddappu Bathukamma (ముద్దపప్పు బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 4th day of Bathukamma is called Nanabiyam Bathukamma (నంబియం బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 5th day of Bathukamma called Atala Bathukamma (ఆటల బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 6th day of Bathukamma is called Aaligina Bathukamma or some people say it is Alaka Bathukamma (అల్కా బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 7th day of Bathukamma is called Vepkayala Bathukamma (వికాయల బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 8th day of Bathukamma is called Vennela Muddala Bathukamma (వెన్నెల ముద్దల బతుకమ్మ).
  • The 9th day of Bathukamma is called Saddula Bathukamma (సద్దుల బతుకమ్మ).

Making Bathukamma is a folk art. Women in groups participate in it and start making Bathukamma from afternoon itself to perform in the night. Because it is a night festival. They collect different types of seasonal colours and flowers and display them in Bathukamma. Most of the girls and women like to participate in making Bathukamma which takes a lot of time, they also enjoy these nine days of festivals with their family and neighbours.
