What is Ganga Dussehra(गंगा दशहरा)?
The word “Dasha” means ten and “Hara” means to destroy; hence, bathing in the river during these ten days relieves one from all sins and diseases forever.
When Ganga Dusshrea Comes?
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month of Sanatan Calendar. Ganga Dussehra is also known as “Ganga Avataran(गंगा अवतरण)” Shubh Divas. On this day Maa Ganga descended from heaven which is mentioned in Ganga Mahatmya(गंगा महात्म्य) holy books. River Ganga is also called "Punyatoya". Hindus believe that on this day the holy river Ganga descended from heaven to earth. This festival is celebrated for ten days, including the nine days before this holy day. Devotees gather on the banks of River Ganga and perform Aarti of Maa Ganga. Devotees take a dip in the river water on this day, they believe that by doing so all sins are destroyed and any disease is cured in Ganga bath.
