About Gudi Padwa 2025

What is Gudi Padwa?

Gudi means 'flag'; according to Kittel, the word is of South Indian origin. The word Padwa is derived from the Sanskrit word Pratipada which means the first day of each fortnight in the lunar month, or the first day on which the moon is visible after the "new moon" Amavasya and Poornima. On this occasion, Gudi is also hoisted, which gave the festival its name. The word Padva or Padvo is also associated with “Bali Pratipada”.

Gudi Padwa is a spring festival that marks the beginning of the lunisolar new year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus. It is celebrated in Maharashtra, Goa and Damodar regions at the beginning of Chaitra, which is the first month of the lunisolar of Hindu Calendar. The festival is characterized by colourful floor decorations called rangoli, a special Gudi flag; which is a sari or dhoti or any other piece of cloth a garland of sugar crystals called gathi, on which are placed inverted silver or copper vessels. The festival also includes street gatherings, dancing, and festive food.

Why Gudi Padwa Celebrates

Gudi Padwa marks the arrival of the spring season and the harvesting of Rabi crops. The festival is associated with the day the Hindu god Brahma created time and the universe. For some, it commemorates the coronation of Rama in Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana or the beginning of the “Shalivahana Calendar” after he defeated the Hunas in the 1st century.
