Who is Valmiki?

Maharishi Valmiki, Sant Kabir, Maharishi Veda Vyas, there are so many great saints and mahatmas who have attained a higher position such as god than even they born in the lower castes.

Maharishi Valmiki, also known as the 'Adi Kavi' or the first poet of Sanskrit, holds a special place in Hindu tradition. He is remembered not only for writing the Ramayana, which is known as “Valmiki Ramayan” which is world famous and one of the most holy books of Sanatan Religion.

The Biography of Maharishi Valmiki

Maharishi Valmiki, earlier he was a dacoit named as Ratnkar. His occupation was, he attacked and looted people in the forest way. One day Devarshi Narad changed his disguise and went on the same way where Ratnakar was waiting o attacked the passengers. Suddenly, Ratnakar attacked him and try to looted Narad Muni. After the robbery, Naarad Muni asked Ratnakar,

Why you do this? Is your family members know all this?

Since how long you been doing this sin?

Ratnakar said, I don't know whether I am committing a sin or a virtue, whatever I am doing, I am doing it to support my family.

Then Narad Muni said, do one thing and whatever wealth you get by doing this, you will spend it for your family, go and ask your family member once that whatever sin I am committing, will you become a part of this sin?

Narad Muni said, I am waiting for you here, you just go home once and ask all your family members about it as I suggested you.

Ratnakar, went home from there and asked everyone his family members at home the same question, will you become my partner in whatever work I am doing?

But unfortunately, everyone said that we don't know, what are you doing to manage and control us. But we will not bear the share of your sin at all. Even Ratnakar's wife also said this. Then he came back and came to Narad Muni in the jungle, and said that no one has become part of my sin. Then Narad Muni said, "Look, you have committed so many sins, which you can’t imagine. How many more sins will you commit? and when you leave this world, you will become a great sinner. Because a person has to blame himself for his actions, not anyone else.

Then Ratankar's consciousness awakened in his mind and he touched Narad Muni's feet, he said that I was a fool, he said himself that, there is no limit to this evil, now I will not do this. What should I do? in future to free myself from this sin?

Narad Muni appeared in the original form and gave him this mantra “Ram(राम नाम)” and said chant this, you will be free from all the sin.

But Ratankar was so stupid that he could not pronounce “Ram” correctly. Then Narad Muni asked to chant as “Mara(मरा)” just reverse word of Ram, after chanting “Mara”, it was corrected automatically as “Ram”. Who knows how many years have passed while doing penance or Tapasya there? By seating at one place for many years, there termites had made a nest and covered into the nest. Then, after many years, Lord Brahma pleased and appeared to him, that from the soil of termites' nest i.e. from the sand, a new life had emerged, only then his name became as “Valmiki”.
