Significance of Missionary Day

Missionary Day is a regional holiday in Mizoram, India that commemorates the arrival of two Welsh Christian Missionaries in the state a century ago. This holiday is always celebrated on 11 January and is declared a public holiday by the state government. Government offices and educational institutions will remain closed on this day.

History of Missionary Day

Rev. J. H. Lorraine and Rev. F. W. Savidge arrived then Lushai country like Mizoram by boat from Assam on January 11, 1894 to spread Christianity in the area. As a result, almost all the “Mizo” people there was a conversion to religion.

Missionaries Established by Presbyterian Church

Missionaries established the Presbyterian Church in the northern part of Mizoram and the Baptist Church in the southern part of the state. To mark this day, local churches will hold prayers and organize community feasts.
