Significance of Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, consisting of a maximum of thirty days. Waging war is forbidden in Muharram and has been so since before the advent of Islam. The term Muharram is an abbreviation of "Muharram Safar", which distinguishes between Safar-1, which was sacred, and Safar-2, which was not sacred, in the ancient Arabian Calendar. However, over time, the adjective Muharram itself became the name of the first month of the year.

Importance of Muharrum

Muharrum is also an important festival for Muslim religions. They perform a number of activities such as prayer to the Allah, fasting whole day, and reading Namaz in mosques and so on. Muharram is the opening month of the Islamic year according to the Islamic Calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year, when war is prohibited. It precedes the month of Safar. The tenth day of Muharram is known as Ashura, an important day of commemoration in Islam. The Shia Community observes rituals for the first ten days of Muharram, culminating with mourning processions in Shia cities on the Day of Ashura.
