About Raksha Bandhan 2025

The Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a very famous and ancient festival in Sanatan Dharm. It is mostly celebrating in every part of India. It is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Bhadra Month, which basically comes in August Month or Shravan Month as per Sanatan Calendar. The word "Raksha Bandhan" means “the bond of protection”, obligation, or care is now principally applied to this ritual. In this festival sister ties up the “Rakhi” thread on the brother’s wrist, then offer roli, moli, flowers, show up the lamp to her brother, then offer sweets. Ater that brother also provide some gifts to his sister. You can imagine from this festival, that it’s a very pious relation between brother and sister. By tying of Rakhi on the brother’s hand. She wants to say, to keep her protect in every situation” as a brother. Because father will not live always, after the father, there is only the brother, who take care of his sister(s).

In the Sanatan religion, Raksha Bandhan is defined as the safety bond that shows the purity and bonding between siblings. Usually, this special Sanatan festival occurs on the full moon day, in the month of Shravan, based on the Hindu calendar.

Raksha Bandhan Story

We have found several stories in Indian history which describe the history of starting this festival. The story of Raksha Bandhan has related today to Hindu mythology and the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

When Sisupala was insulting Srikrishna in a crowded gathering Raja Sabha, abusing him and using very foul language, then Srikrishna forgave his 100 mistakes, and then cut his head with Sudarshan Chakra. When Sudarshan Chakra returned after cutting the Sishupal’s head on Srikrishna's index finger, then Sudarshan made a small cut from Srikrishna's finger. At the moment, Draupadi tied a piece of cloth from her saree, which stopped the bleeding. After this incident, the piece of cloth becomes a sacred thread and symbolizes the true significance of Raksha Bandhan.

Bhadra Purnima is also called as Rakshi Purnima. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the day of Bhadra Purnima, also, bathing in the Ganges and donations are made on the day of Bhadra Purnima. Bhadra Purnima is one of the auspicious day as per Sanatan Dharma.
