In the year 2026, India's Republic Day will fall on Monday, January 26. Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution in 1950, which marks the country's transition to a democratic republic.
Significance of Republic
The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India, thus transforming the country from a dominion to a republic following independence from the British Raj in 1947. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. This date was chosen because the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj(पूर्ण स्वराज) means complete independence on the same date in 1930.
