When Sheetal Shashthi Comes?
Sheetal Shashthi also known as Sital Shashthi is celebrated as the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, which is a major festival of the Brahmin group in Odisha.
Sheetal Shashthi(ଶୀତଳ ଷଷ୍ଠୀ) is celebrated to celebrate the marriage of Parvati and Shiva mentioned in the Shiva Purana. When Tarakasura was creating terror and havoc in the entire world like heaven, mortal and netherworld, all the gods approached Vishnu to find a solution.
Why Sheetal Shashthi (शीतल षष्ठी) Celebrates?
Vishnu had failed; as Brahma had given a boon that Tarakasur could only be killed by Shiva's son. Tarakasur knew very well that after the death of his first wife Sati, Shiva had become detached from the world and was wandering in the forest performing penance and that he would never have a son; moreover, Shiva was in deep meditation. Mata Sati said, I am attracted to him because of his knowledge. I will not accept marriage with anyone else except him. After being satisfied with all her tests, Shiva appeared in his divine form. Finally, Shiva and Sati got married on Jyeshtha month, Shukla Paksha Panchami Tithi. This day is a very auspicious day for Shiva devotees as well as Sanatanis.
When is Sital Sasthi in 2026?
Sital Sasthi or Sheetal Shashthi falls on 11 March 2026, Wednesday.
