Significance of Teja Dashami (तेजा दशमी)

Teja Dashami is celebrated on Bhadrapada Shukla Dashami by all communities and it is mainly celebrated in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Tejaji martyred himself while fighting enemies to protect cows at Sursura, Kishangarh, Ajmer are the places of Rajasthan. Teja Dashami festival is celebrated annually on the 10th day of Shukla Paksha or the rising phase of the moon in the month of Bhadrapada month according to the traditional Sanatan calendar. It is mainly celebrated in North India. Tejaji was a famous Rajasthani folk hero. Popular belief that, Tejaji has some with divine power. He saved people from snake bites at that time. People worship him to avoid deadly snake bites. People also pray to the deity for the speedy recovery of people bitten by poisonous snakes.

The Story of Tajaji

Once when Tejaji was going to his in-laws house, the Meenas of Lachha Gujri stole the cows of Mer. On the way, Tejaji found a snake burning in fire. He saved it but the snake became very angry due to the separation from its pair and started biting him. Then he promised to bite the snake while returning and proceeded towards his in-laws house. Tejaji, bound by his promise on Lachha's request, fought with the Meena robbers and freed the cows. Tejaji was seriously injured in this cow protection war.

On returning, in keeping with his promise, he came to the snake's hole and due to wounds, all over his body, the snake said, “Your entire body is injured, I do not bite an injured body.” Then Tejaji said, “It's okay, no problem, I will show you my tongue, would you have bitten there?” Then the snake agreed and got itself bitten the tongue. After all, he was died, then his wife also committed sati with him. But that snake became heiress after seeing Tejaji's true commitment. He became pleased and gave him a boon that from today everyone will worship him as the god of snakes and due to this boon, Tejaji also worshipped as the god of snakes even today and people recall him when snake bites to anyone else.
