Vishu is a Malayali New Year
Vishu is a festival celebrating the Malayali New Year in Kerala, Tulu Nadu and Mahe, India. Vishu falls on the first day of Medam month of the Malayalam calendar. This is the traditional New Year, while the New Year of the Kollam era calendar falls on 1 Chingam.
Vishu Day is also called Vishukkani(विशुक्कनि)
This festival is celebrated with family time, colorful auspicious items are prepared and these are seen as the first thing on Vishu day (Vishukkani).
In particular, Malayalees want to see the golden flowers of Indian laburnum (Kani Konna), money or silver objects, cloth (pattu), mirrors, rice, coconut, cucumber, fruits and other crop products. A few days before Vishu, people start setting off fireworks in their homes and it culminates with lots of fireworks on the day of Vishu. People wear new clothes (Kodi) and eat a feast called Sadhya. In Kanittam, elders give a little pocket money to children.
