What is YMA Day?
YMA Day is celebrated as a regional public holiday in Mizoram on 15 June every year. YMA Day commemorates the founding of the largest non-profit, secular and non-governmental organization of the Mizo people in Mizoram, India. The organization was founded on 15 June 1935. All schools, universities, businesses, and government institutions are closed on this day, it is a state-level holiday for all.
History of YMA Day
The Young Mizo Association (Y.M.A.) was founded by "Welsh Christian Missionaries". The Mizo leaders discussed a proposal to unite all Mizo people at the residence of Katy Hughes on 3 June and proposed the formation of the Young Mizo Christian Association. The organization has 2.5 lakh members and more than 700 branches in Mizoram and other neighbouring states.
