How Simha Sankranti Formed?

Simha Sankranti formed when the Sun come into the Simha Sankranti. The Sun falls in the month of August in this Sankranti. The festival of Simha Sankranti is considered very important. Simha Sankranti is also called "Ghee Sankranti" in Uttarakhand.

Significance of Simha Sankranti

This is the auspicious period when the king of the zodiac, Sun God, enters his zodiac sign Leo. The change in the zodiac sign of Sun God is known as Sankranti. This day is dedicated to the worship of Lord Sun. It is believed that those who worship the Sun at this auspicious time and offer “Arghya” to him get happiness and peace according to that, so know the auspicious signs and rules of this day.

The Story of Simha Sankranti

It is believed that during the reign of the Chand Dynasty, the craftsmen used to exhibit their dolls in the palace on the day of Simha Sankranti. They were given certificates by the king for their hard work and diligence. Ordinary men and women of the dynasty also used to be a part of this festival and made fruit and flower industries to the members of the royal family. The tradition of offering fruits and other offerings to the members of the royal family was known as “Olag Sanskar”.

On this day, butter and ghee are consumed on Kulthi roti throughout the Kumaon Region in Uttarakhand. Due to the extensive use of ghee on the occasion of Simha Sankranti, it is named Ghee Sankranti in the Bageshwar region of Kumaon, Uttarakhand.

Simha Sankranti Puja Vidhi

  • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes, wearing red or yellow-coloured clothes is very good.
  • Offer Arghya to Surya Narayan, stand with east direction.
  • Put red flowers, rice and kumkum, turmeric etc. in a water in a copper pot.
  • While giving Arghya to Lord Surya, chant the mantras of the Sun God, such as 'Omm Suryaya Namah' or 'Omm Ghrini Suryaya Namah' or 'Omm Adityaye Namah'.
  • Light a Ghee Lamp or called Diya and show incense.
  • Offer jaggery, fruits or other home-made sweets to the Sun God.
  • Perform Mangal Aarti at the end of the pooja.
  • Offer Kshama Yachna, means apologize for any mistake made during the puja.
  • Donate grains, clothes, or money as per your capacity.
  • Feeding green fodder to cows is also considered auspicious on this day.
  • Eat pure and Saatvik food on this day. Avoid tamasic things like non-veg and alcohol with sex for the day.
