How Mesha Sankranti Formed?

When the Sun enters into the Aries Zodiac Sign, then it is called Mesha Sankranti.

Significance of Mesha Sankranti

According to the Hindu calendar, when the Sun God leaves the Pisces sign and enters the Aries sign, then that period is called Mesha Sankranti. Surya Dev stays in one zodiac sign for a month. In this way, the Sun spends one year in 12 zodiac signs. This Sankranti is a symbol of new consciousness and new resolution. On this day the new path of the Sun begins, which not only indicates the change of seasons, but also becomes a symbol of auspiciousness and the rise of the new sun of religious faith.

Mesha Sankranti also called “Maha Vishuva Pana Sankranti” in Odisha. It is one of the most prominent festivals in Odisha. Why it is called Maha Vishuva Sankranti, because the Sun stay for 24 hours on Vishuva Rekha on the day, this is the only day where day is 12 hours and night is also 12 hours. On the day Sun has direct impact falls on the earth.

Mesha Sankranti has been mentioned with special importance in mythological texts and scriptures. The day of Mesh Sankranti is also called the beginning of 'Solar New Year'. This day is very auspicious for worship of Sun, bathing in sacred river like Ganga, Baitarani, Narmada, and charity, and chanting.

In Odisha, it's called “Pana Sankranti”. In Punjab, it's known as “Baisakhi” or “Vaisakhi”. In Tamil Nadu, it's called “Puthandu”. In Assam, it's also known as “Bihu”. In West Bengal, it's celebrated as “Poilah Boishakh”.

On this day, bathing in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Godavari etc. destroys the sins of many births and paves the way for attaining salvation.

It is believed that from this day Lord Shri Ram started his journey towards the south to conquer Ravana. At the same time, it is also said that from this day the worship period of Lord Vishnu begins again.

Along with the astronomical changes, Mesh Sankranti is also a festival to awaken the Lord Sun within us. Just as the Sun God moves forward on his path and light triumphs over darkness, similarly we should also move forward on the path of knowledge, service, and devotion by eradicating the darkness of our life. This Sankranti brings newness in our mind, freedom from old disorders and inspiration for new good deeds.

Whatever the Sankranti may be, but on the day of Sankranti, offering water to the Sun God, lighting a lamp, performing Aarti by placing a lamp near Tulsi and worshipping Lord Vishnu is considered to be especially fruitful.

This day is also extremely auspicious for:

  • Annadan(food)

  • Gaudan(cow)
  • Swarnadan(gold)
  • Mesh Sankranti period is indicative of the movement of the Sun from 'Dakshinayan' to 'Uttarayan', when the energy of the gods is especially active on Earth. People do :
