About Devshayani Ekadashi 2025

Introduction to Devashayani Ekadashi

Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as Dev Shayani Ekadashi or Ashadhi Ekadashi, is an important Hindu fasting day that falls on the 11th day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Ashadha usually in June or July. This Ekadashi marks the beginning of the Chaturmas, a four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in a state of deep cosmic sleep called “Yoga Nidra” on the serpent “Shesha Naag”. Some people also said “Deva Shayani Ekadashi” because it signifies the “sleeping” or resting period for Lord Vishnu.

Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the great Ekadashi among 24 Ekadashis which is observed with great devotion and fasting by Sanatan devotees in India. On the day, devotees keep fasting and perform puja and worship Lord Vishnu, seeking his blessings and protection in the life. It is believed that observing this fast and participating in religious activities on this day can cleanse one’s sins and lead to spiritual growth.

King Mandhata, who was the powerful king of Ikshvaku Raj Vansh, he was a righteous and pious ruler, and blessed by Lord Vishnu after observing the Deva Shayani Ekadashi fast. The observance of this Ekadashi is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth to the devotees.

As per Bhavishya Purana, Krishna narrates the significance of Dev Shayani Ekadashi to Yudhishthira. Sri Krishna sharing a story about Dev Shayani Ekdashi with King Yudhisthira.

Dev Shayani Ekdashi Vrat Katha

There was power king of Ikshvakhu Raj Vansh named as King Mandhata is narrated in this context. He was very religious and courageous. Suddenly king's city faced drought for three years continuously, that’s why many people and animals died for the lack of water and foods. Rest of the people live in a difficult way. King Mandhata unable to think what to in this situation. He also discussed with his ministers about it. But there was no proper solution come out to sort out the problems. Still the tension was going on after all. The King was unable to sleep then he decided to please the Indra as rain god. One day, eventually, Sage Angiras appeared and advised the king to observe this Deva Shayani Ekadashi Vrata and worship Lord Vishnu. By doing so, after sometime by the grace of Vishnu, there was rained in the kingdom as well and everywhere looked around greens. Ekadashi has a very big importance, not everyone can observe its fast unless there is blessings of Lord Vishnu.
