About Indira Ekadashi 2025

Indira Ekadashi Fast is Considered Very Auspicious.

On this day people worship Lord Vishnu and along with mother Lakshmi ji. According to the Vedic Calendar, Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of every Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha, which has its own special significance. Indira Ekadashi is one of them.

Take a morning bath with a devotional mind on the bright day of Dashami in the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. Then after, eating in the afternoon, concentrate, have one meal and sleep on the ground at night. Wake up early in the morning, take bath and worship Lord Vishnu as per the method. If you want to keep the vrat waterless, do not keep it so that you can keep the vrat with fruits at one time. Next day, break the fast-during Paran, take care that you should not break the fast beyond the Paran time, otherwise this fast will give adverse result to you.

Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha(इंदिरा एकादशी व्रत कथा)

Sri Krishna is speaking to Yudhisthira, King! it is a matter of ancient times, in Satya Yuga, there was a famous prince by the name Indrasen, who now being the king of Mahishmati Puri used to follow the people religiously. His fame had spread everywhere. The King Indrasen, being engaged in the devotion of Lord Vishnu, used to spend his time chanting the salvation-giving names of Govinda and systematically engaged himself in the contemplation of spirituality.

One day the king was sitting happily in the royal court, and suddenly the Deva Rishi Narada descended from the sky and arrived there. Seeing him coming, the king stood with folded hands and after worshiping him ritually, made him sit on the seat, after which he spoke like this Hey! Muni Shrestha! by your grace I am completely fine. Today, with your darshan, all my Yagya rituals became successful. Dear God! Please show me the reason for your arrival.

Naradji said, Nripa Shrestha! listen, what I say is going to surprise you, I had come from Brahma Loka to Yama Loka, sat there on an elevated seat and Yamraj worshiped me with devotion. At that time, I had also seen your father in Yamraj's meeting. He, had come there because of breaking his fast. Rajan! he has given you a message, listen to it. He said, Dear Son! send me to heaven by giving me the virtue of Indira Ekadashi fast. I have come to you with this message from him. Rajan! keep the fast of Indira Ekadashi to ensure that your father attains the heaven.

After listened to Narad, King said, Hey Bhagwan! I am lack of knowledge, lack wisdom, you can consider like a child, I don’t have any ideas on Ekadashi Fast. Please tell me about the fast of 'Indira Ekadashi'. How to perform the Ekadashi Vrat and what are the rules as well as regulations of this fast.

Narad said, Rajendra! listen, I will tell you the auspicious method of this fast.

The Significance of Indira Ekadashi

Following this rule, perform Shraddha in front of Shaligram Shila in the afternoon time to please the ancestors and welcome the Brahmins with Dakshina and feed them. A learned man should smell the “Atma Pindam” given to his ancestors and feed it to the cow. Then, worship Lord Hrishikesh with incense and fragrance and stay awake near him at night. After that, when the morning comes, worship Shri Hari with devotion again on the day of Dwadashi. Then, after serving food to the Brahmins, he himself should eat silently along with his brothers, relatives, grandson, and son etc.

Narad again said, Rajan! by following this method, you should be free from laziness and observe the fast of 'Indira Ekadashi'. By doing this, your ancestors will go to the Vaikuntha abode of Lord Vishnu.

Here Lord Shri Krishna says to Yudhisthira, Rajan! saying this to King Indrasen, Devarshi Narada disappeared. The king, along with the queens, sons and servants of the king, performed that auspicious fast according to the method prescribed by Narad Muni.

Sri Krishna says, hey Kunti Nandan! after completion of the fast, flowers started raining from the sky. Indrasen's father went to Shri Vishnu Dham mounted on Garuda and Rajarshi Indrasen also went to heaven after enjoying the Akantaka kingdom and placing his son on the kingdom. In this way I have described before you the importance of 'Indira' fast. By reading and listening to this a person becomes free from all sins.
