Introduction to Parsva Parivartan Ekadashi (पार्श्व परिवर्तन एकादशी)

Parsva Ekadashi or Parsva Parivartan Ekadashi is also known as Baman Ekadashi. It is in the month of Ashwin which according to the English calendar corresponds to September.

When Lord Vishnu goes to sleep with Yoga Mudra to protect the universe on Dev Shayani Ekadashi in July, he leaves and Lord Shiva looked after the universe instead of him. After 3 months in the month of September, he changed his side on this Ekadashi. That is why, it is known as Parsva Parivartan Ekadashi.

Yudhishthira and the five Pandavas were all devotees of Lord Krishna. They always worshipped and respected him; the five Pandavas never committed any sins nor thought of doing any wrong against anyone else. So, Lord Krishna always was pleased protected them.

Shri Krishna explained all the importance, significance, and benefits of Ekadashi Vrats to Yudhishthira one by one and he also asked Shri Krishna about the importance of Parshva Parivartan Ekadashi Vrat.

Thereafter Lord Krishna said, Oh King Yudhishthira! You are the incarnation of Lord Dharmadev. Hence you know very well that wherever there is Dharma, I always there.

Listen! I will tell you the significance and importance of Parsva Parivartan Ekadashi Vrat.

Significance of Parsva Ekadashi(पार्श्व एकादशी)

This Ekadashi is the bestower of supreme virtue and it also frees us from the bondage of life. Because Ekadashi frees us from all sins, this Ekadashi is also called Jayanti Ekadashi. Just by hearing the glory of this Ekadashi, a person becomes free from his/ her past sins.

The devotee who observes the fast of this Ekadashi gets the benefit of performing Ashwamedha Yagya. Therefore, any devotee who wants to get liberation from this material world must observe the fast of Vaman Ekadashi (वामन एकादशी).

He said, I would suggest, the devotees should also worship the “Vaman” or dwarf form. By observing the fast of this Ekadashi, our life gets the benefit of worshiping Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is also said that that devotee is definitely returns to the abode of Shri Krishna. There is no better fast than the fast of Ekadashi in the universe.

Parsva Parivartan Ekadashi Vrat Katha

It is said that during the four months of Chaturmas or rainy season in which Lord Vishnu sleeps also called Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, and Kartik months. On the day of Parsva Ekadashi Lord Vishnu changes his sleeping state, hence this Ekadashi is also known as Parivartani Ekadashi.

Sri Krishna tells, when I reached King Bali in the form of Vaman, I asked him for three steps of land and when he agreed to give me the land, then my feet filled the nether world, my thighs filled the “Martya Lok” the whole world, my waist filled the “Swarga Lok” called heaven.

Thus, expanding my body, I covered the Sun, Moon and all the worlds of the universe. When everyone saw this huge form of mine, then they understood that he is not a normal Brahmin. They started bowing to me again and again and started praying for me.

After this, I told King Bali, that I have measured the earth in one step and heaven in the second, now you tell me where should I place my third step. Hearing this, King Bali bowed to me and requested me to place my third step on his head. I extended my third step and sent him to nether world called “Patal Lok(पाताल लोक)”.

I was very happy to see the kindness of King Bali and so I decided that I would always reside in his palace.

So, this was the story of Parsva Ekadashi. We should pray to Vamana avatar along with devotion on this Ekadashi. Devotees who observe this Ekadashi fast with reverence and devotion get all kinds of happiness and also after death all those devotees return to the abode of Shri Krishna.

We dedicate this day completely to Lord Krishna. On the day of Ekadashi, we should please, Lord Krishna by fasting and do whatever is conducive to devotion.
