The last day of Navratri is celebrated as Dussehra. As per Ramayan, on this day Ram killed Ravana. Lord Sri Ram worshiped Maa Durga for 9 days and finally received the blessings of Goddess Durga on the day of Navami and killed Ravana on the Dussehra, that’s why it is called as Vijayadashami or "Victory Day", follows the nine nights of Navratri.
However, Navratri is filled with symbols of eliminating evil and wanton nature and having reverence for all aspects of life and even the things and objects that contribute to our well-being. The nine days of Navratri are classified according to the three basic qualities Tamas, Rajas and Satva.
The first three days are Tamas, where the Goddess is fierce like Durga and Kali. Today, “Ravan Dahan” programs are also held everywhere. In this festival the effigies of Ravana, Meghanadh and Kumbhkarna are burnt on the festival of Dusshera date in India Calendar 2025, from this festival we come to know that, “no matter how big the evil is, it has to be eradicated one day”.
Why Dusshera Celebrates?
Signifies the triumph over the three gunas: Raja (passion), Tamas (ignorance), and Satva (purity).
