About Devutthana Ekadashi 2025

When is Devutthana Ekadashi (देवउत्थान एकादशी)?

Prabodhini Ekadashi, also known as Dev Utthana Ekadashi, is the Ekadashi of the 11th lunar day in the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Kartik. It marks the end of the four months period of Chaturmas, when Lord Vishnu is believed to have been awake up in the bed. However, it is a tradition in Shayani Ekadashi Lord Vishnu sleeps on the day of and wakes up on the day of Devutthana Ekadashi. That’s why it is called as Devutthana.

The end of Chaturmas, when marriages are prohibited, marks the beginning of the Hindu wedding season. Prabodhini Ekadashi is followed by Kartik Purnima, the day celebrated as Dev Deepavali, it is called as the Diwali of the Gods.

The symbolic union of Vishnu and Lakshmi or Tulsi Vivah is also celebrated on this day.

Kunti Putra, King Yudhisthira asked Sri Krishna, Hey Vashudev! you told me already almost the significances of all Ekadashis. Please share with me what would be the significance of Devutthana Ekadashi. I am extremely interested to know about it.

Lord Krishna says, Hey Kunti Shresth, Devutthana Ekadashi is very auspicious and unique among 24 Ekadashi’s.

I am telling you a story, please listen it seriously!

Devutthana Ekadashi Vrat Katha (देवोत्थान एकादशी व्रत कथा)

In a state everyone kept fast on Ekadashi. Because it was the order of the king of that kingdom. From the people, servants to animals, food was not given on the day of Ekadashi Tithi. One day a person from another kingdom came to the king and said, Maharaj! Please hire me, I want to do job in your kingdom. Then the king, put a condition before him that okay, let's keep it. Every normal day you will get everything to eat, but on Ekadashi you will not get food. That person said yes I agreed tell, at that time, but on the day of Ekadashi, when he was given fruits instead of food items, he went in front of the king and started pleading, Hey Maharaj! this will not fill my stomach and I have never observed Ekadashi fast, I am feeling very hungry, I will die of hunger, I will have to take food.

The king reminded him of the condition, but he was not ready to give up the food, then the king gave him flour, pulses, rice etc. As usual, he reached the river, took bath and started cooking food. When the food was ready, he started calling God, come God! the food is ready. First you eat and then I eat.

On her call, Lord Krishna arrived in a four-armed form wearing Pitambara and started eating food with his lovingly. After eating food, God disappeared and he went to his work.

Fifteen days later, on the next Ekadashi, he started saying to the king, Maharaj, give me double the goods. That day I remained hungry. When the king asked the reason, he said that God also eats with us. That's why this stuff is not complete for both of us.

The king was very surprised to hear this. The king said, I cannot believe that God eats with you. I observe so much fast and worship, but God never appeared to me. After listening to the king he said, Maharaj! If you don't believe then come along and see for yourself. On the next Ekadashi day, the king sat hiding behind a tree. The person prepared food and kept calling God till evening, but God never came. At last he said, Oh God! If you don't come, I will sacrifice my life by jumping into the river.

But still God did not come, then he moved towards the river with the intention of sacrificing his life. Knowing his strong intention to sacrifice his life, soon God appeared and stopped him and they sat together and had dinner. After eating and drinking, they took him in their plane and took him to their abode. Seeing this, the king thought that there is no benefit from fasting unless the mind is pure. The king gained knowledge from this. He also started fasting wholeheartedly and finally attained the heaven.
