About Kanuma Festival 2025

What is Kanuma Festival?

Kanuma is an important day during the Pongal and Sankranti festivals, both of which are ancient harvest festivals that occur in mid-January, celebrating the reverse movement of the Sun, marking the beginning of the end of winter.

In Telangana, people celebrated Kanuma(कनुमा), the festival of cattle, with traditional enthusiasm and joy on the third day of Sankranti festival. It is also celebrated in Andhra Pradesh.

Where Kanuma Festival Celebrates

Kanuma Festival is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana mostly dedicated to the worship of cattle. Generally, this harvest festival is celebrated on the third day of “Makar Sankranti”.

On this occasion, rural people worship cattle and agricultural equipment. Rural craftsmen and artisans who assist farmers in daily work are honoured.

Farmers across the state are showcasing their bulls and decorated cattle in cattle processions organized at several places on the streets of their villages. Cattle competitions and village games for youth are also being organized at many places to celebrate the festival. Cattle are being worshiped in most of the rural areas as the farming community considers them important for the nutrition and development of the society.

According to Hindu mythology, this day holds special significance as Lord Krishna saved the people of Gokulam from heavy floods in the village.

Pasuvula Panduga(पसुवुला पंडुगा)

On the day of Kanuma Festival, farmers wake up early, take bath and decorate their cattle with ornaments. They also paint their horns with bright colors. After this, they take their cattle to nearby temples where they perform rituals to worship them. An important attraction of this festival is the bull fight and betting on cattle, known as “Pasuvula Panduga”. A similar festival of bull fighting, “Jallikattu”, is celebrated in Tamil Nadu.
