Pongal Festival 2026

In North India, the festival of Makar Sankranti and Lohri is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn. At the same time, in South India, it is celebrated as Pongal when the Sun reaches Uttarayan. Pongal is mainly celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. According to the Tamil calendar, the new year begins from this day. This festival is not celebrated for one day but for four days and different gods are worshiped during these four days. Significance of Pongal

Day 1: Bhogi Pongal(भोगी पोंगल)

The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi Pongal. There is a tradition to worship Lord Indra on this day. Worship is done to express gratitude to Lord Indra for a good harvest. Along with this, old things are burnt and dance is done like Holi. With this the new year begins.

Day 2- Thai Pongal(थाई पोंगल)

The second day of Pongal is known as Thai Pongal. There is a tradition to worship Sun God on this day. On this day, a special kind of kheer is made to express gratitude to the Sun God for the good harvest. For this reason, it is called Pongal Kheer.

Day 3: Maatu Pongal(मट्टू पोंगल)

The third day of Pongal is known as Mattu(मट्टू) Pongal. On this day, there is a ritual to worship agricultural animals like bull, bull, cow etc. On this day bulls and cows are decorated and their horns are painted. There is a traditional game of bull race named as “Jallikattu(जल्लीकट्टू)” is organized on this day.

Day 4: Kanya Pongal(कन्या पोंगल)

The fourth and last day of Pongal is known as Kanya Pongal. It is also known as Tiruvallur. On this day the house is cleaned and decorated with flowers. Along with making Rangoli in the main gate, an archway made of coconut and mango leaves is installed in the main gate. On this day, sugarcane is kept in the open and various dishes made from milk, rice, sugar and ghee are offered to the Sun God.
