What is Raja?

The term “Raja” means menstruate(ଋତୁସ୍ରାବ) which is naturally done every month of every woman which is natural on the earth. Similarly, it is considered Mother Earth also get menstruate on these 4 days. Raja Parba or Raja festival is an ancient festival of Odisha. It is also known as Raja Sankranti or called Mithuna Sankranti as per astrology. This festival is a three-day-long festival of woman hood celebrated in Odisha state.

First Day of Pahili Raja(ପହିଲି ରଜ)

The first day of Raja called “Pahili Raja”. Raja Parba is generally celebrated in 14th June every year. It is the right time and people celebrates on the day. Pahili Raja date is always the first day of the three-day festival. The festival is celebrated to respect Bhudevi, the wife of Lord Jagannath, and an idol of Bhudevi can be found in Puri Jaganath temple.

The day before first day is called “Sajabaja” or called “Shringar” preparatory day during which the house, kitchen including grinding stones are cleaned, spices are ground for three days. During these three days women and girls take rest from work and wear new dresses, sarees, alata (a liquid red color do paint on the feet), and wear various types of ornaments. Girls and ladies are tried to make her beautiful as much as in their area.

On the day girls and new married woman wear new clothes and swinging in rope under the tree with Raja Doli Song (ରଜ ଦୋଳି ଗୀତ) these songs are local based songs. On the day, people make different types of sweets, recipes, pithas (rice cake). People do entertain and enjoy this festival in the rural area.

Second Day of Raja Parba(ରଜ ପର୍ବ)

The second day of the festival signifies beginning of the solar month of Mithuna, from which the Rainy season starts. The second day is Mithuna Sankranti, on the day people visited mostly Lord Shiva temple and worship Lord Shiva and Parvati though it is one of the prominent Sankranti for Odisha.

Third Day of Raja Parba(ରଜ ପର୍ବ)

The third day of Raja is basically for “Bhudaaha” or called “Basi Raja”. The word Basi means stale. On the day people worship the land of the earth called “Bhudevi”.

Fourth Day of Raja Parba(ରଜ ପର୍ବ)

The final fourth day is called “Basumati Snana”, in which the new married ladies and girls are bath the grinding stone as a symbol of Bhumi with turmeric paste and adore with flower, sindoor etc.

On the day people worship the Goddess Earth with seasonal fruits, flowers and Naivedyas are offered to Mother Earth.

However, in a biological term, a woman basically menstruates every month, which is a sign of fertility, so it is also considered as Mother Earth menstruates on the occasion of Raja festival. During all these four days of the festival, it is considered to be the menstruating period of Mother Earth. During the festival all agricultural operations remain suspended. As a mark of respect towards the Earth during her menstruation days, all agricultural works comes to stop as reserve mode during these days. On the occasion of Raja Parba, girls and ladies are never walk in barefoot, neither dug to the earth, not grinding anything in the house. they are basically taking rest from the all types of work and enjoy the Raja Parba for four days as well.
